AFRO FUNK WITH GRETEL BURGESS

25TH FEB & 4TH MARCH

Afro Funk is a fast, high impact, aerobic dance class. It combines some traditional African, tribal belly and funk movement together.

 

Gretel Burgess holds a Bachelor of Communication in Theatre/Media, a Masters in Social Work and a Certificate in Theatre and Dance at Sekolah Tinggi Seni (University), Padang Panjang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Gretel has taught for many youth drama companies and dance theatres in Australia and toured and performed overseas, including Canberra Youth Theatre, Canberra Dance Company, Corrugated Iron Youth Arts in Darwin, PACT Youth Theatre in Sydney and NIDA holiday programs in Northern Queensland. She has taught many different groups from asylum seekers on Christmas Island, the Multi-Cultural Council for Refugees, Parents and Toddlers to children and teenagers with Down Syndrome. Gretel has just recently spent the last two years combing her two passions, health and the arts by peer facilitating a STEPS program for adults with stroke and acute brain injury through Queensland Health and facilitating dance and drama programs for both ARC Disability Services for adults and Regis Aged care facility in northern Queensland.

​

Gretel is currently working for Canberra Dance Theatre - CDT as a teacher for Afro Funk and has worked with the GOLDS on an Indonesian end of term performance. Gretel works for the Belconnen Arts Centre as one of the dance facilitators for The Wellbeing dance programs. These programs include Dance for People with Multiple Sclerosis, Dance for People with Parkinsons, Dance for People with Dementia and Dance for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing program.

Justine Brown is a proud Wallabalooa Woman from the Ngunnawal Nation; she is very passionate about sharing her cultural knowledge with community through a range of Cultural Practices such as Traditional Dance, Weaving, Yarning Circles and Cultural Walks on country. Her aim is to provide a safe learning environment that reinforces a strong sense of belonging, respect and appreciation. Justine has a high level of Cultural Integrity and Knowledge and living on Ngunnawal Country has given her great opportunities to work alongside her Elders such as her Grandfather Kingswell Carl Brown (Deceased) and Ngunnawal Elder Tina Brown. The teaching opportunities Justine had growing up on Country with her Elders has provided her with the knowledge of Country and Cultural
Practices which now she uses the educated those willing to learn about Canberra’s Cultural
significants.

Ngadyung meaning Water in Ngunnawal Language is a dance performed by the Ngunnawal people as a cleansing dance. Ngunnawal Country has fourteen rivers; these rivers were pathways for visiting and pasting Nations with each camp sight having a watering hole for cleansing bad spirits away.

 

The Ngadyung dance displays how travellers would immerse themselves into the water, allowing the water to cleanse them from any bad energy or sprits that have attached themselves to the traveller.

BURLESQUE WITH LIZ RAINBOW

Rainbow's burlesque class is suitable for dancers aged 18 years and over.

​

Rainbow is an award-winning, Canberra-based burlesque performer, dancer and teacher. Jete-ing onto the scene in 2015 in ‘Females on Form’, she has continued to surprise and entertain audiences with her unique interpretation of burlesque. Since then she has performed and conducted workshops at burlesque events around Australia including the Australian Burlesque Festival 2017 (Melbourne), This is Burlesque (Mackay), Hoochie Coochie Review (Townsville) and Red Light Confidential (Melbourne). Rainbow has a strong background in classical ballet and jazz, and is skilled in the use of silk fan veils and feather fans. In 2017 Rainbow won the Burlesque Idol Australia Grand Final where the judges described her as ‘ridiculous in all the right ways’.

Flirting with Burlesque

This is a fun and flirty introduction to the art of tease for dance practitioners and enthusiasts. Learn how to confidently engage and tease your audience while mastering the fundamentals of burlesque. In this class you will be introduced to the bump and grind, the shimmy and the 'walk' through energetic drills and a fun choreography.

CONTEMPORARY WITH OLIVIA FYFE

6TH & 13TH MAY

Olivia is a performer, teacher, and choreographer. Graduating from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2010, Olivia has been a Party Artist with Australian Dance Party (ADP) in Canberra since its inception in 2016, performing in 20+ works with the company. Wearer of many hats; she performs independently most recently with Little Dove Theatre Art, works as Party Whip for ADP, is the Social Media Marketing Coordinator and regular choreographer at QL2 Dance and teaches contemporary and ballet at several dance studios.   

 

Class:
Olivia will teach an upbeat and energetic contemporary dance class. Incorporating technical exercises designed to challenge co-ordination and provoke a good belly laugh, you can also expect delicious travelling phrases, unusually bizarre imagery, exciting foreign tunes, and silly social improvisations.

AFROBEATS WITH

KAGISO RATLHAGANE

KG is one of Canberra’s most experienced Hip Hop dance choreographers, teaching the style for over 15 years from beginner to advanced levels and all ages.

 

As a Hip Hop musician and performer, he has always incorporated dance into his live shows and has developed his own style of teaching that focuses on musicality, high energy and performance. 

 

KG’s classes are very versatile where he teaches a mix of Hip Hop fundamentals, Urban choreography and Afro dance.

 

He is the Artistic Director and Owner of Passion & Purpose Academy in Gungahlin, where he teaches kids from 3 years to adult. In founding the school, the aim was to create a Multicultural dance school in Canberra, where students of all nationalities would feel welcome in an inclusive environment. The school not only teaches Hip Hop classes but Cultural dance styles too. 

 

As a youth mentor, KG is committed to providing dance classes as positive outlet for young people to express themselves and gain confidence. He has seen how engaging in dance at a young age can truly transform peoples lives for the better.

Angelica is the principal teacher at the Flamenco Centre of Canberra (FCC). She has more than 20 years of training and performing experience, studying under Adriana Rodrigues and later Tomás Dietz at the renowned Los Carmonas Flamenco Academy in Sydney. In 2018 Angelica moved to Canberra and shortly after began teaching at Tomás' flamenco school. She enjoys organising flamenco performances and fundraisers for the Canberran community.

Class:

This class will teach you the basic technique of flamenco dance, including some thrilling footwork!

Mel is a dancer/choreographer/teacher from Canberra. She has grown up training at Fresh Funk Dance Studio, and continuously seeks out training opportunities such as participating in The Dream Dance Company’s 'The Dream Show Business' course. Mel is very passionate about teaching and as well as creating her own shows has recently started the Beyoutiful Dance Project which explores movement and self development.

COMMERCIAL WITH LILAH GOW

Lilah Gow is a graduate of Brent Street Performing Arts. Originally trained in classical ballet, Lilah found her true calling in improvisation, contemporary, commercial, JFH and hip hop. Training young dancers, choreographing and performing for corporate/commercial work in Canberra and Sydney for many years was her main passion. Her focus was then turned to the visual art of makeup artistry and has been enthralled in this world for the last 10 years. Coming back into the love of dance, Lilah has begun to experiment with the importance of movement and the empowerment of expressing oneself through this medium and breath. The joy of letting your hair down and taking it back to having fun dancing your heart out in class. 

 

Class:

It’s time to try and shake away the winter slumber. Get ready to strut your stuff and feel the music. 90s dance music and a few slow jams will fuel this class as you let go and feel the music. EVERYONE is welcome. The only rule is, leave all your stresses at the door! And just enjoy yourself!!

CONTACT IMPROVISATION WITH DEBORA DI CENTA

Debora Di Centa is a Canberra based independent dance artist, teacher and choreologist. Debora grew up in Italy and started dancing at a young age. She has extensive training in ballet, jazz, contemporary dance and she is an expert in chronological studies, the contemporary development of Rudolf Laban principles and practices in dance and performance (Laban Movement Analysis). Debora graduated and specialised in dance studies at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, London. Since then she has collaborated in various dance works, research, and performances with many artists and dance specialists around Europe and the US. Since 2019 she has been pursuing professional development in Australia, New Zealand and Asia.

 

Debora teaches, performs, choreographs, and directs dance events working for professionals and in community settings. Since 2016 Debora has lead the Canberra Contact Improvisation community and has been team member of the Australian Government founded Dance For Well Being Program at the Belconnen Arts Centre. She trains professional and emerging-professional contemporary dancers at Dance Development Centre Canberra and collaborates in various projects with Independent Artist Liz Lea (Australian Dance Awards Artist 2017), Canberra Dance Theatre and Praksis Canberra. Debora is currently working for Ausdance ACT as Project Manager.

​

As an independent artist she works through her label ISEMS PROJECTS. Her motto is “Dance for All!”

Immerse yourself in the world of Contact & Improvisation.

​

The body is  the most powerful vehicle of expression and during these two sessions with Debora you will be guided to experience and explore the fundamentals of Contact Improvisation starting with individual improvisation tasks that will lead into duo practice and some group improvised movement scores.

A fun relaxing way to re-connect with oneself and others, open to both beginners and experienced practitioners!

ACRO WITH JAKE SILVESTRO

A circus and visual artist, Jake is excited by fine art, theatre and storytelling. With a passion for creative experience and boundless energy for physical movement Jake has carved a career in multiple art forms since 2010. Jake has toured with the internationally successful Circus OZ, CIRCA, Casus, Company 2, Dislocate and GOP, as well as many small to medium sized arts companies in Australia.

​

After graduating from the ANU School of Art and Design, Jake founded his own company, Poncho Circus, based in Canberra. Jake produced and toured physical theatre productions from 2012 – 2017 with this collective. Outside of his touring work Jake has maintained his own projects to continue his professional arts practice in illustration, prop making and acrobatic research. 

​

In 2020 Jake created his first solo show ‘December’, that explores his two main artforms of drawing and acrobatics in reflection on the bushfire crisis of 2019/2020. This show will be touring nationally in 2021 and 2022.

Jake has a reputation for his dynamic, explosive, and fusion of styles. In 2018 he toured a workshop series called ‘Hurricane’ which breaks down his signature style to help students explore creative movement and acrobatic dance.

"Foundations of physical contact through the lense of acrobatics"

After a decade of performing acrobatics around the world Jake Silvestro will be delivering two workshops aimed at introducing the fundamental elements of contract, weight bearing and ensemble movement. Focusing on movement efficiency and taking weight, this workshop invites participants into the first steps of physical connection that are involved in contract improv and group acrobatics. This workshop is open to all levels and will begin by demonstrating the strength we can find when working as a group. By sharing weight and trusting others through physical contact dancers can find new and exciting ways of engaging with others.

Alison Plevey is a graduate of WAAPA, BA Dance (Hons), and an award-winning choreographer and dance and physical artist based in Canberra. Her practice spans youth dance and theatre, education, cross-disciplinary collaboration, festivals, commissions, dance film, solo research, mentorship and arts advocacy in regional NSW and the ACT. As Leader of Australian Dance Party she has created several critically acclaimed works, most recently ‘Symbiosis’ (ANBG, Mar 2021) and ‘Lake March’ (Sept 2020). Alison has worked closely with QL2 Dance since 2010 as a teacher and choreographer. She utilises dance as a powerful and universal communicator through which we might experience, question and celebrate. Largely site specific, her work expands the visibility of dance, enabling a more conscious and connected community.

Class:

In true Party style, Alison will take you through a warm up with soul and joy, repertoire from some of their signature works and explore short choreographic tasks and improvisations using environment to fuel movement and meaning in performance making.

BALLET WITH MARGARET TAYLOR

4TH & 11TH NOVEMBER IN STUDIO & ONLINE

At the age of 11 Margaret switched from being a state representative athlete to classical ballet training.

​

Margaret completed her schooling at the Pretoria Art, Ballet and Music School where she concentrated on classical ballet. She completed her advanced examinations in both the RAD and Cecchetti methods. She was trained by Diana Ward, Susan Oosthuisen, Ken Yeatman, Vicki Karras, Gillian Joubert and Jane Allyn.

​

After her schooling she completed a performing arts degree before joining the PACT Ballet Company in South Africa. During her time at the ballet company she worked with world renowned choreographers and shared the stage with international artists. Margaret has danced in many ballets. Her favourites include; Swan Lake, Giselle, Anna Karenina, War and Peace, Romeo and Juliet, Papillon, In the Glow of the Night, Coppelia, Scheherazade, Don Quixote and La Fille Mal Gardee.

​

Margaret later left the ballet company and completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree culminating in a qualification as a Chartered Accountant. Margaret has always maintained her love of classical ballet and has attended class regularly through the years.

​

Margaret now divides her week between work as a Chartered Accountant and sharing her love, experience and passion for dance by teaching and training aspiring dancers

​

Class, From Margaret:

My class is very much a traditional ballet class paying attention to technical detail. I teach a solid barre building exercises in speed and accuracy as we progress through the barre. Centre work similarly starts gently and gradually builds up to turns and allegro. Music and the sheer enjoyment of movement to me is really what dance is about.

HIP HOP/STREET FUNK WITH LEENA WALL

18TH NOVEMBER IN STUDIO & ONLINE

Caroline “Leena” Wall was the first to bring hip-hop/street-funk style classes to the ACT, with the creation of the Fresh Funk program in the year 2000. Leena has trained in various dance forms for over 30 years, but her main focus is this fun and accessible style. Leena has travelled to LA, New York and Japan to train (and also perform) for almost 2 decades, learning from leaders in the commercial hip-hop dance industry such as Napoleon and Tabitha, Tricia Miranda, Parris Goebel, the Kinjaz, Brian Friedman, and many many more. Teaching dance is Leena’s passion and she works frequently with schools, dance camps, and Ausdance ACT, sharing her love of dance with people of all ages.

 

 

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

Leena’s class will be hip-hop/street-funk based. It will be energetic and fun, with a focus on musicality and grooves. 

URBAN WITH JESSICA GOWING

25TH NOVEMBER IN STUDIO & ONLINE

Jess is a current tutor at Fresh Funk. She has danced in hip-hop/street-funk styles since she was 8 years old and has been teaching for the last 4 years. With a love of musicals and an exceptional singing talent, in 2015 she completed her Certificate IV in Acting for Stage and Screen at Perform Australia and was a part of the Hi-5 cast for their 2016-2017 world tour.

She has performed in many Canberra musicals including Wicked (2016) and most recently Mamma Mia! (2021) in one of the main roles.

 

Genre: Urban  

In Jess’s class you will be introduced to commercial hip-hop grooves and dynamics, whilst learning a feel-good routine. Jess is an enthusiastic teacher that will encourage you to work hard and have a blast whilst doing so. You will leave this class feeling good and with a smile on your face.

Ashlee is a mover, maker, performer and educator with a Bachelor of Dance from the VCA and a Diploma of Comprehensive Pilates Instruction through Polestar Pilates. An alumna of QL2 Dance, Ashlee has performed and presented dance work across Australia and New Zealand, worked with Australian Dance Party, Liquid Skin and Mirramu Dance Company. Her artistic interests include site-specific performance and improvisation and her work often experiments with playful, non-traditional modalities as a means to immerse her audience into concepts of place, communication and memory.

​

Ashlee’s Pilates practice began in 2009 while studying at the VCA and has been invaluable to maintaining her ongoing fitness and wellbeing. It fed her interest in how the body learns movement and since becoming an instructor she loves to empower people to find more efficient ways of moving to avoid injury during day-to-day, sports and recreational activities. She advocates for the versatility of the Pilates method to help anybody achieve their goals, and has experience teaching athletics clubs and secondary school groups as well as in physiotherapy and fitness studios. As a Polestar Pilates Mentor, Ashlee also assists students as they complete their Pilates qualifications.

​

Class Description:
This Pilates Mat class is designed to give you a whole-body workout, focusing on controlled, mindful strengthening. Pilates is perfect for the living room - all you need is space to lie down! You do not need any special equipment, but grab a mat, towel, rug or soft carpet to lie on, and it may be useful to have a cushion close by. Ashlee will be offering exercise modifications and progressions, so this class is suitable for any level of experience or fitness.

​

Pilates is super beneficial for anyone - dancers especially - and you will walk away from this class feeling centred and perhaps a few centimetres taller!

Alana is a graduate of the Adelaide College of the Arts and previously trained at QL2 Youth Dance Company. Since graduating in 2017, Alana has moved back to Canberra to work for the Australian Dance Party. Most notably, she co-choreographed the Canberra Critics Circle award winning 'Lake March' in 2020 with Artistic Director, Alison Plevey. In 2019 she performed in 'From the Vault', also a Canberra Critics Circle Award winner and a shortlisted nominee for an Australian Dance Award.

​

As an independent choreographer she has created the works 'V', 'Great Woman Wolf Woman Bone Woman' and in collaboration with Ryan Stone, 'Mulch'. Alana also continues her relationship with QL2 as a professional performer, teacher and choreographer.

​

Class:
Zoom class will start with some short and sweet exercises, nothing that moves too much so you can join us for a boogie even if you just have a small space! We’ll finish up with some fun creative and improvisation based activities. 
The aim is connect and share our love of dance and find curiosity in the spaces we’re spending so much time in all to some fabulous upbeat pop music.

Faith is a dance teacher, performer and choreographer from Canberra. She’s been dancing for 14 years, focusing primarily on the styles of hip hop and dancehall. Faith has performed around Australia as well as performing internationally in America in 2014.

​

She has also had a few opportunities to dance at corporate events and in music videos and TV commercials. She’s been teaching since 2016 at a variety of dance studios as well as primary and high schools.

​

Faith loves to vibe with all her students, making it a fun positive place for everyone to grow and learn.

​

Class: Faith’s open class will be a fusion of hip hop and dance hall!

CONTEMPORARY WITH NICK JACHNO

Nicholas Jachno is a Canberra based contemporary dancer. He studied a range of dance techniques at Canberra Dance Development Centre before attending The New Zealand School of Dance, Graduating with a Diploma in Dance Performance majoring in contemporary.

​

In 2018, Nicholas was part of Malia Johnston’s, 'Rushes', for the 2018 New Zealand Arts Festival, which received four Wellington Theatre Awards. Nicholas also worked for Cadi McCarthy as a dancer in Catapult Dance Hubs premiere season of 'That Place in Between'.

​

In 2019, Nicholas premiered his first solo work, 'An Observant Man', as a part of the DDCreative residency. The work has since been presented as part of The Bold Festival, Ausdance ACT's ESCALATE IV, Belconnen Arts Centre's Dance on the Edge and Catapult Dance Choreographic Hubs, Propel.

In 2020, Nicholas performed in Catapult's Season, 'Mixed Bill', which featured four works from choreographers; Kristina Chan, Craig Bary, Omer Backley-Astrachan and Adam Blanch.

​

Earlier this year Nicholas was a part of Liz Lea’s ‘The Point’ which premiered at Belconnen Arts Centre.

“Let’s get our bodies off the couch and moving! My class will be hip hop based, particularly focusing on grooves and feeling/connecting to the music. My number one priority in class is to have fun and enjoy the moment, so everyone is welcome to join in for a boogie!”

 

Mel is a dancer/choreographer/teacher from Canberra. She has grown up training at Fresh Funk Dance Studio, and continuously seeks out training opportunities such as participating in The Dream Dance Company’s 'The Dream Show Business' course. Mel is very passionate about teaching and as well as creating her own shows has recently started the Beyoutiful Dance Project which explores movement and self development.

A dance-music expert, Cathy hosts an all levels slow barre class to a driving sound track of trip hop, house, r'n'b, techno and ambient beats. Cathy has worked as a performer, choreographer and theatre maker for over 25 years.
